Doug Murray played college hockey for Cornell University from 1999 to 2003. He was known as a physical, two-way defenseman with a powerful slap shot. In the 2001-02 season, as a junior, he had a standout year, recording 32 points (11 goals, 21 assists) in 35 games. His strong performance earned him a top-ten nomination for the Hobey Baker Award and he was named a First-Team All-American. He was also a two-time All-ECAC First Team selection and was named the ECAC’s Best Defensive Defenseman in his senior year.

After his collegiate career, Murray was drafted by the San Jose Sharks and embarked on a long professional career. Known for his “Crankshaft” nickname and hard-hitting style, he played parts of eight seasons with the Sharks, becoming a fan favorite. He also had stints with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, totaling 518 NHL games and 64 points. He also represented Team Sweden at the 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2008 World Championships before retiring in 2016.
