Lane Hutson established himself as one of the most dynamic offensive defensemen in North American hockey, building his career through the U.S. National Team Development Program (USNTDP) and internationally before making his National Hockey League debut. Born on February 14, 2004, in Holland, Michigan, Hutson gained recognition for his exceptional playmaking, vision, and edge work. He compiled 63 points in 60 games with the USNTDP in his draft-eligible 2021–22 season and earned the Best Defenseman award at the 2022 IIHF World U18 Championship. Despite concerns regarding his smaller frame, the Montreal Canadiens selected him 62nd overall in the second round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. Internationally, he went on to win a bronze medal at the 2023 World Junior Championship and a gold medal as an alternate captain at the 2024 World Junior Championship. Following the conclusion of his collegiate career in April 2024, Hutson signed a three-year, entry-level contract with Montreal and made his NHL debut on April 15, 2024, recording two assists across his first two professional games to finish the 2023–24 season.
During his two seasons playing NCAA Division I hockey at Boston University, Hutson put together one of the most productive modern collegiate careers by a defenseman. As a freshman in 2022–23, he tallied 48 points (15 goals, 33 assists) in 39 games, becoming the highest-scoring freshman blueliner in Hockey East history while earning Hockey East Rookie of the Year honors, the Walter Brown Award, and a First Team All-American selection. In his 2023–24 sophomore campaign, he matched that high-powered production by recording 49 points (15 goals, 34 assists) in 38 games, leading all NCAA defensemen in points per game and helping guide the Terriers to a Frozen Four appearance. Over his 77 total games at Boston University, Hutson amassed 97 points (30 goals, 67 assists), earning back-to-back First Team All-American honors and twice being named a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award.
