T.J. Hensick was a prolific scorer for the University of Michigan Wolverines from 2003 to 2007. In his sophomore year, the 2004-2005 season, he had a stellar performance with 23 goals and 32 assists for 55 points, earning him a place as a Top 10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award. His impressive statistics that season also helped him earn a spot on the AHCA West First-Team All-American roster and the All-CCHA First Team. In addition to his individual honors, Hensick led the Wolverines in scoring three times during his four-year career and is among the top-10 all-time in both assists and points for the program.

After a successful college career, Hensick was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He played in 112 NHL games with the Avalanche and the St. Louis Blues, recording 12 goals and 26 assists. While he spent time in the NHL, Hensick had a very productive career in the American Hockey League (AHL), where he was a consistent point producer for over a decade. He holds a career AHL total of 588 points, with 416 assists. Hensick also played in Europe for one season before finishing his career in the ECHL.
