Gaetano “Gates” Orlando was a highly productive forward for Providence College from 1980 to 1984. In his final season, he served as team captain and recorded 53 points with 23 goals and 30 assists in 34 games. This performance earned him a top-ten finalist spot for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award in 1984. He finished his college career as the second all-time leading scorer in Providence College history, with 213 points on 95 goals and 118 assists. He was also a Second-Team All-American in 1984 and a member of the ECAC Championship team in 1981.
Drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in 1981, Orlando went on to play professionally in North America and Europe. He played parts of three seasons in the NHL with the Sabres, appearing in 98 games and recording 44 points. The majority of his North American career was spent in the AHL with the Rochester Americans. In 1987, he moved to Italy and had a long and successful career in the Italian and Swiss leagues. He also represented Team Italy in numerous international tournaments, including two Olympic Games and several World Championships.
