A dominant force on the blue line for the University of Denver, defenseman Dave Shields was recognized as a top 10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award in 1990. During his senior season, Shields was a First-Team All-American and a First-Team All-WCHA selection, serving as a standout leader and offensive contributor for the Pioneers. His exceptional play helped guide the team to an impressive season, and he earned the WCHA Defensive Player of the Year award, a rare honor for a defenseman to be recognized among the nation’s best.
Following his decorated collegiate career, Shields embarked on a professional journey that included time in both North America and Europe. Drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft, he went on to play a handful of games with the team, but spent the majority of his professional career in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Cape Breton Oilers. He later took his talents overseas, playing for a season in Finland with the Jokerit organization before concluding his playing career.
