Tom Kurvers holds the Bulldog career record for most
goals by a defenseman, with 43 from 1980-84. He was
named UMD’s Rookie of the Year in 1981, and in his Hobey Baker season of 1983-84, was the WCHA’s Most Valuable Player, WCHA All-Academic, and all-WCHA first team, helping lead the Bulldogs to their first WCHA regular season title and a second-place finish in the NCAA championship. Raised in Bloomington, Minnesota, he was selected by Montreal in the 1981 NHL entry draft and played for the Canadiens, Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, New York Islanders and Anaheim Mighty Ducks in an 11-year NHL career. He retired after a stint in the Japanese professional league, and is currently the assistant general manager for the Tampa Bay Lightning. In 1991 he became a charter member of the UMD Athletic Hall of Fame.
