Countdown to Hobey:

Johnny Gaudreau

August 30, 2024

It is with great sadness that we at the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation extend our deepest condolences following the unexpected and tragic passing of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew last night. Johnny, who won the Hobey Baker Award in 2014, was not only an outstanding player but also an extraordinary person who brought immense passion and joy to the game of hockey.

We are devastated by this loss. His loss is a tremendous blow to all who knew and loved Johnny and his brother. Our hearts go out to their family, friends, the Columbus Blue Jackets organization, and everyone mourning this unimaginable tragedy. We are here to offer our support and stand with all who are grieving during this incredibly difficult time.

Gaudreau entered Boston College in 2011 and helped the Eagles to the national title as a freshman in 2012. He went on to win the Hobey Baker Award during the 2013-14 season posting 80 points on 36 goals and 44 assists for the highest college hockey point total in 11 years. Johnny then turned pro with the Calgary Flames, the team that drafted him, and spent the next eight seasons becoming one of the NHL’s top scorers.

The 31-year old Gaudreau then signed a seven-year contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2022 and spent the past two seasons there. A skilled playmaker, Johnny participated in the NHL All-Star Games seven times and was always a fan favorite. Johnny and his brother Matt were teammates during Johnny’s Hobey year at BC. Matt had his own five-year pro career and was head coach of Gloucester Catholic High School in New Jersey where both played.

Johnny and his brother Matthew were on a bike ride while in town in New Jersey for their sister’s wedding when both were struck and killed. All of us at the Hobey send our heartfelt condolences to his wife Meredith; their children Noa and Johnny; his parents Guy and Jane; and sisters Kristen and Katie.
