The news was made official Monday, but NNCNOW.com first reported this story in July when one of Stauber’s family members tweeted news of the position.

“Congrats to my Uncle Robb,” tweeted Emma Stauber, Robb’s niece, “for being selected to be the USA Women’s Hockey Olympic Goalie Coach!” Emma, also native of Duluth, Minn., is currently playing at the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD), the school at which Robb coached from 2004-08.

The 1986 Duluth Denfeld graduate was inducted in July 2012 into that school’s Hall of Fame, that after earning all-state honors in 1986 while leading the Hunters to the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) boys’ hockey state tournament.

He was drafted in 1986 by Los Angeles but chose to first play collegiately at the University of Minnesota, where he won two Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) championships.

In 1988, Stauber became the first goaltender to ever win the Hobey Baker, given each year to the most outstanding player in men’s college hockey. He left the University of Minnesota after his junior season and turned pro with the Kings, eventually playing 10 seasons and reaching the 
Stanley Cup finals in the 1992-93 season.

After retiring, Stauber turned to coaching and from 2004-08 was the goaltender coach of the UMD women’s hockey team. The Bulldogs won an NCAA national title during his tenure at UMD and was runner-up for another.

He has previous experience coaching with the United States women’s national team, having won three world championships with that program in 2009, 2011, and 2013.
