Countdown to Hobey:

Ryan Degnan

2016 | Rhode Island | BOYS

Lincoln High School | Lincoln Lions | BOYS

Ryan has an incredible story for his High School hockey career. In his first game as a freshman, Ryan was hit into the boards and after a period of playing, he complained about his shoulder hurting.  Turns out, Ryan had a broken collarbone. Ryan missed his whole freshman year because of that injury, but was very eager return for his Sophomore year.

Just before the next hockey season started, Ryan was fully healed and ready to return. This is when he was dealt the biggest blow of his life. Ryan was diagnosed with Lymphoma. Chemotherapy was going to take up his whole hockey season. He wanted nothing more than to be part of the team and to be around the team as much as possible. Feeling weak and tired from the Chemo, Ryan would still make it to practices and sit on the bench wearing his jersey and a beanie to cover his hairless head. Getting Ryan healthy and making him feel like he was part of the team was the only thing we wanted for him as coaches. Turns out, Ryan wanted more. He was determined to play hockey again, and boy that determination really paid off for the kid. Not only did Ryan beat cancer during our hockey season, he returned to dress for our last playoff game of the year and started the game for us.

Ryan has been working his tail off for the last 4 years to be where he is today. Ryan is a Captain of our team, and in my opinion, his story makes him the most qualified Hobey Baker Award Recipient to ever come out of Lincoln High School, maybe even in the whole state.
