THE HIGH SCHOOL CHARACTER AWARD

Success in life, much like success in hockey, demands more than skill alone. It demands a positive attitude, an excellent work ethic, and a will to succeed, no matter how hard it can be.

Quite simply, it demands character. That’s the true power of student athletics and why we honor the players who give their best for the team.

Established in 2003, the Hobey Baker High School Character Award was created to honor high school hockey players who exemplify the Hobey Baker ideal that Character Builds Excellence. Candidates for a High School Hobey Baker Award are selected by their coaches, based on the following criteria:

• Integrity and positive attitude
• Coachability
• Outstanding sportsmanship
• Community spirit

Each year, a single senior hockey player from each participating high school is selected by their coaches to be honored by teammates and celebrated by the school and the community for outstanding individual performance on and off the ice.

Matt Flinn exemplifies the attributes of the Hobey Baker award by demonstrating exceptional integrity and positive attitude, coachability, and sportsmanship. Matt’s dedication to the game has earned him the respect of coaches and players. His competitive spirit is balanced with his sense of sportsmanship and awareness of what it means to be a teammate. His leadership, integrity, and positive attitude have been invaluable to our program. Matt’s leadership demonstrated his devotion to the game as well as to his team mates. Matt is a shining example of the intangibles involved with how the game of hockey should be played, and a young man whose good character will impact any community he is a part of in the future.

It is the coaching staff’s honor to nominate Matt Flinn for the 2019/2020 Hobey Baker Award.
