Countdown to Hobey:

DETROIT RED WINGS SIGN FORWARD ANDY MIELE, FORMER HOBEY BAKER AWARD WINNER

July 3, 2014

By Brendan Savage, Michigan Live

The Detroit Red Wings have signed free-agent forward Andy Miele to a one-year contract, adding more depth for the Grand Rapids Griffins.

The 26-year-old Miele, a native of Grosse Pointe Woods, split last season between the Phoenix Coyotes and Portland Pirates of the AHL.

In seven games with Phoenix last season, he had two assists, a plus-4 rating and five penalty minutes. With Portland, he had 27 goals, 45 assists, a minus-18 rating and 66 PIM.

Miele (5-8, 175) was a second-team AHL All-Star last season. He split the last three seasons between Phoenix and Portland after playing four seasons at Miami University in Ohio. Miele won the 2011 Hobey Baker Award as the best player in college hockey after getting 24 goals and 47 assists in 39 games.

In 209 games with Portland, Miele scored 62 goals while drawing 117 assists. In 15 career games with Phoenix, Miele had two assists.

He is the second Hobey Baker winner the Red Wings have signed in two days. Kevin Porter, the 2008 winner, inked a one-year deal on Tuesday. He, too, is bound for Grand Rapids.
