Countdown to Hobey:

Silas Dobbs

2021 | South Carolina | BOYS

Ft Mill | Ice Jackets | BOYS

Fort Mill Ice Jackets nominate Silas Dobbs for Hobey Baker 2020-2021. Silas came to us as a newer player to the game. He wasn’t needed for his home team but that didn’t stop him. He came to Fort Mill with no expectations and fit in with the guys immediately. As a newer player he led the team to an 8-4 record and upset wins over the top two teams. One of the losses was when the team played with no goalie. He played through and won several games with 8 skaters. He held us in our playoff game with 8 skaters before losing in a shootout.

Year 2 I brought another more experienced goalie. I was worried about how Silas would take it. The other goalie had two sets of gear. A game I named the other kid as starter, I walked in the room and Silas was already wearing the other kids skater gear. He was supportive although he had to split time and it was new to him. He would have loved to have played against his home team in the final but he was supportive of his teammate.

Year 3 comes a freshman goalie partner and in game 1 with our rival he had a tie going into the 3rd but I always let both goalies play in games we travel to. Things didn’t go well when Silas was pulled but he offered to go back in and eat the last few minutes after the team had clearly given up. He spoke maturely after the game about it to me and has been supportive going forward.

Academically – Silas has a GPA of 5.283, an Honor Roll Student, is Co-president of National Senior BETA Club serving committee, SC Life Scholarship Qualifier and Top Five Percent Class Rank. He’s currently working 3 jobs and volunteers at the GGHA as a hockey coach, on-ice coordinator and volunteer ref. He is also a youth leader and counselor at his church ministry. He’s been on mission trips and is involved in leading camps in Allendale, currently on hold due to the pandemic, but will be part of the basic Medical Coverage in Kenya, helping with local Covid relief.

Silas is a great teammate and kid. He’s gone through more than he should have to in order to play high school hockey in Ft Mill and is deserving of the recognition. He, more than anyone, exemplifies high school hockey in South Carolina.
