Character. Excellence. A love for the game. Sportsmanship. This is what defines a Hobey Baker Award winner. Our nominee for this award for the 2021-2022 season epitomizes all of these things and much, much more. This nominee possesses all of the characteristics of not only a terrific hockey player but even more importantly, a fantastic young man. He is humble and confident; quiet, choosing to lead by example; determined and resilient; talented and coachable. He has always shown respect for his opponent and compassion and support for his teammates. His character and resilience was often mentioned in our locker room this past season as an example to the younger guys. This player experienced some early success, playing regularly in varsity games during his freshman season but then his ice time took a step back in his sophomore season. Calling on maturity uncommon for a young man of that age along with a combination of resolve, fortitude and heart, he converted that setback to fuel and used that fuel as energy to get stronger and work on his game. During that offseason, this player could most often be found at Marino’s gym, putting in the work that would lead future playing minutes. The hard work and determination paid off in his junior season when he earned a significant increase in playing time. That effort remained consistent in his junior offseason, again spending hours in the gym. He returned for his senior season as a definitive team leader and Assistant Captain. He demonstrated quiet confident leadership during his senior year and in the process, defined what it means to be a Hobey Baker Award winner. Our Hobey Baker award winner for the 2021-2022 season is number 33, Brady Ewing.
