Countdown to Hobey:

Wesley Oliver

2017 | Indiana | BOYS

Bloomington Blades High School Ice Hockey Club | Blades | BOYS

I have had the privilege of coaching Wesley Oliver for more than 10 years. In that time, I have seen him grow as a player and young man. Wesley meets every challenge with such great motivation and determination that failure is not considered an option. This year I have eight senior players, but I had no reservation about naming him as Captain, knowing quite well that I could count on his leadership on and off the ice. I knew Wesley would ensure not only the success of the team, but also the development of the players around him. When our team is unsuccessful, he bears a great deal of that “burden of responsibilityâ€_x009d_. When the team is victorious, he is humble and appreciative of his teammate’s efforts. Always the first to speak up when we talk post-game, about our successes and failures; but mindful of not singling anyone out, focusing on what we could have done better as a team. Wesley is a player that recognizes his weakness and works closely with the coaches to improve, so he may better support the team. Prior to the season before being named captain, Wesley lead off ice “dry land sessionsâ€_x009d_, and pushed his teammates, often working with the younger players and encouraging them to complete the exercise. I could always count on him “setting the barâ€_x009d_ for the workout, but remaining humble in the process. He has consistently maintained a high level of fitness and strength, which is demonstrated by being one of the best skaters I have had the privilege of coaching in 30+ years in the sport. I counted on Wesley to start practice on several occasions throughout the season when I was running late from work. A simple phone conversation on expectations and I knew it would all be in place when I arrived just a few minutes late. When the team would lose focus throughout the season, Wesley would step up and remind the team of the coaches’ expectations and the potential that existed with this team. Off the ice, Wesley achieves the highest academic standards and volunteers his time in the community with Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels. Last year, Wesley mentored students at his high school and served as a tutor for his classmates. Just a brief overview of his attached resume that he excels in every environment and has lead cross county cycling tours, received recognition as a musician, and served in student council. I am grateful to be involved in his life as a mentor and as a coach; he has pushed me as a coach as well to stay ahead of his drive, determination, and skill. Wesley Oliver is a very deserving applicant of the Hobey Baker Award and I have no reservations in providing this recommendation. I am eager to see where life takes this young and proud that he refers to me as his coach and mentor.
