Countdown to Hobey:

Sophia Welch

2024 | Rhode Island | GIRLS

La Salle Academy | Rams | GIRLS

Over the past 3 years that I have coached Sophia in girls’ ice hockey, I have always been incredibly impressed with both her positive outlook on life and her coachability. Sophia does not regularly show up on the scoresheet with tons of goals and assists but that does not diminish or detract from her value to the team. She always has an impact on our games as a hard-working, team-first player who makes everyone around her better. As the only team captain, she leads her teammates by modeling a strong work ethic, all the while, creating a supportive environment for our young players to thrive. Further, she is one of the most coachable players that I have encountered in my many years of participating in high school sports. She has a strong ability to listen and comprehend the many skills and systems necessary to be productive in our hockey program. As a result of all of the above-mentioned strengths, Sophia has been a joy to coach and work with over the past 2 seasons.
While Sophia possesses a strong athletic resume, it is her qualities as a person that truly distinguishes her from many of her peers. As a team leader, she has been tasked to help lead our team by setting a strong example on and off the ice as well as being a mature role model. Further, she is not a “rah, rah” type of leader but carries herself with a quiet confidence. She is quite comfortable interacting with her peers in any setting and can communicate just as effectively with adults. Her high level of maturity is quite refreshing and unmatched by other young women her age.
