Samuel Nyman
2018 | Maryland | BOYS
Huntingtown High School | Hurricanes | BOYS
Sam has played hockey for nearly a decade and has always approached the game in the most sportsmanlike manner. Early in his career a coach instilled the Make your teammate better philosophy in him. He practices that mantra to this day.
Out of this mantra grew a greater respect for the individuals who also play this great sport, both teammate and opponent. Even though he is winding up his long youth hockey career in the MSHL and 18U travel ranks, PIM’s are only a blip on the radar screen of his stats. And at 6′ – 3 tall his imposing on ice presence drew a lot of attention from the most physical of opponents. However, Sam electes to play hockey rather than spar with his adversary.
Sam also understands that hockey is but a fleeting moment in most players lives and academics must be a primary focus. To that end, he has had great success at maintaining honor roll status for much, if not all, of his academic career.
I have taken part in the nomination of 3 other Hobey Baker awards and Sam is certainly deserving of being this seasons recipient. Not only because of the way he handles himself on the ice, but because of the way he carries himself off the ice as well.
