Mylee joined the Century/John Marshall Girls Hockey team (CJM) as a 9th grader in the 2022-23 season. While Mylee was a candidate for our Most Improving Player Award last season, and will be a strong contender again this year, the fact is, on a team that skates 2 lines, she has never played regularly above the third line. Despite this, I have always considered Mylee as both embodying our culture and an ambassador for the values to which we aspire.

While she has dressed for nearly all of our Varsity games, there have been many in which she has played only a handful of shifts, or less. As an athlete, it is hard to imagine something more frustrating than not being able to play. And yet, Mylee has always remained focused, positive, and supportive of her teammates.

We have a tradition after each game where players call out their teammates for something positive they did during the game. In four years with the team, Mylee is the only player who has had something positive to say after every single game.

To illustrate Mylee’s character further, Mylee earned our Pond Hockey Award last season:

■      In the opinion of teammates and coaches, the award is given to the player who has played the game with the most joy and passion.

Mylee just loves the game. Each year, she volunteers her time with the RYHA Try Hockey for Free program, Shannon O’Hara Tournament, and RYHA, Sled Hockey, and Adaptive Floor Hockey practices. She actively contributes to and supports the Grizzly operation. All this in addition to giving her time, energy, and talents to support Community support programs like NAMI, Von Wald Emergency Shelter for Teens, and Sophie’s Squad (Mental Health awareness for young athletes).

I think a description found within the Hobey Baker Character Award materials accurately captures Mylee’s contributions to the game: her involvement with the game makes the game better.
