As a freshman, Michael Velicer showed immediate leadership qualities. The coaching staff recognized the commitment and passion Michael had for hockey and the Eureka Program. Announcing a freshman as an Alternate captain for a High School team could be too much to handle for many players. Michael stepped up to the challenge and defined himself as a major contributor to the growth of this club. Throughout his high school career, Michael was able to learn, overcome and succeed as a leader. Outside of the rink Michael challenged himself both academically, socially, and athletically by participating in numerous clubs and programs at the High School. In every aspect, Michael represented the quality of person we hope to have on the Eureka Hockey Club. Next year Michael will be starting a new journey that will be filled with many challenges and opportunities. I know, without a doubt, his experiences in high school have helped to set a foundation for him to succeed in any journey he chooses to take. Michael represents the core message of the Hobey Baker award, by recognizing personal success is overshadowed by helping those around you succeed with you. We were blessed to have Mikey captain this program for the past two seasons.
