Northwest Ice Hockey is proud to select Micah Chin as its 2022 – 2023 Hobey Baker High School Character Award winner. Micah consistently demonstrated and embraced those values and characteristics this award recognizes – Character, Excellence, Love of Hockey and Sportsmanship. Micah was always focused on becoming a complete player working on individual skills, collaborating with his teammates, listening to his coaches, and even watching the Philadelphia Flyers throughout his four years on the Northwest High School ice hockey. He was always the first player on the ice and last to leave the ice for every practice. Micah never hesitated to perform whatever role he was asked to complete on the ice (defense, penalty killing, power play, etc.), was the ultimate team player, and continually demonstrated to his teammates a “Team First” attitude. As the Northwest Varsity Ice Hockey’s senior captain, Micah routinely demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship both on and off the ice towards players, coaches and officials. Other coaches commented to our coaching staff on his poise, talent, leadership and sportsmanship. Micah’s high school hockey career was noted with several key goals and assists, contributions to two Varsity and one JV Conference Championships, and being selected 2022-23 MSHL MHC D2 All-Division Honorable Mention Defense.

While his on-ice values and character were noteworthy, Micah’s strength of character, integrity, commitment, scholarship and community service were best demonstrated in his off-ice activities. He was an SGA representative, a Northwest Student Ambassador, a Badminton club member, a National Honor Society member, the Montgomery County Fine Arts Award recipient, a MCPS Silver Star Award recipient, achieved years of straight A’s, and will be graduating with a 4.62 GPA. Beyond Northwest, Micah is a Level 2 Certified USA Hockey Official, a Montgomery Cheetahs Hockey Club volunteer, and, most impressively a Cadet Senior Airman (C/SrA) of the Maryland Civil Air Patrol! As a Cadet Senior Airman, Micah focused on leadership skills, aerospace education, and physical fitness while also serving the community at various events, such as COVID-19 drive thru testing support and Wreaths Across America. His dedication to service as a Cadet was also recognize with numerous awards including, the 2023 Commander’s Commendation Award and the 2020 Airmen of the Year Award.

Whether on or off the ice, Micah demonstrated the values and character Hobey Baker demonstrated in academics, in athletics and as a squadron leader in WWI.
