Matthew Williams was selected as this years Hobey Baker winner because of his undying love for the game, his class, character, consistency, and championship level attitude he brought to the rink every day. Matthew has been apart of the Varisty Prep team since his sophomore year, and this year as a senior, is serving as an assistant captain. In the classroom, Matthew has always had consistent grades that fall into the top tier of the schools academic success, well close to 4.0 every semester. Matthew has displayed great sportsmanship taking only 7 penalties in his 3 years on the varsity prep team, and treats opposing players with the same amount of respect as his own teammates. Matthew is a quite but effective leader, who is not always the most outspoken, but steps up when the time is right and when the team needs him most, as well as leading with his skill and play in the ice, stepping up in big moments throughout the season. His character in and out of the rink is consistent throughout the entire season, as he always comes prepared to give his all whether it be off ice training, video sessions, on ice practice, or a game, you can always rely on Matthew to give 110%. Matthew is also a leader off the ice, helping teammates with tutoring and school work, to help keep his teammates above the academic standard set for student athletes. On the ice, Matthew is a high end player, who has showed his skill greatly over his last two season. Matthew is a through and through forward, and played his entire career that way, and was always a dependable player who’s vision and play making ability was second to none, primarily as an incredible assist man, who seemed to always find the back of the net at the perfect times. In his senior season this year, after losing 4 key defenseman last season due to graduation, I switched Matthew to defense, and he has stood out as one of the top defenseman in the league, and especially on our team playing on the first D pair. His knowledge for the game made is a no brainier to put Matthew in that situation, and he has excelled greatly through the difficulties and adversity of completely switching the way he plays the game of hockey. It is with my great honor and please to nominate Matthew Williams as the Hobey Baker finalist for the St. Mary’s Ryken Knights Ice Hockey program.
