Countdown to Hobey:

Matt Gasser

2016 | Colorado | BOYS

Broomfield | HTB Hawks | BOYS

I have had the privilege of coaching Matt Gasser on his high school hockey teams for the past three years.  What separates Matt from other players is his ability to lead both on and off the ice.  Matt’s unwavering optimism and infectious positive attitude inspire and uplift his teammates.  He is a role model for most of the players on our team.  His reputation precedes him, as many of the younger players at Hyland Hills aspire to be like him, and parents hope their children develop the strength of character Matt exhibits every day.  On the ice, Matt is willing to accept responsibility without being asked, and manages to lead his teammates by example, showing them what to do instead of telling.  He respects everyone playing the game, displaying outstanding sportsmanship throughout his interactions with his teammates, the referees, and the players and parents from the other team.  He is uniquely able to elevate the attitude of all of the players on the bench; and remains calm, cool and collected under pressure, encouraging his teammates to do the same.  Off the ice, Matt maintains a high grade point average and makes a point of giving back to his community.  He mentors younger youth hockey players in his free time, not only teaching them how to become better hockey players, but also working with them to instill the values of respect, humility and positivity.  Matt’s willingness to go above and beyond for his teammates and his community exemplifies the values represented by the Hobey Baker Award.  Over the last three years, I have seen firsthand the love Matt has for the game of hockey, and this drive paired with his integrity and character make him an invaluable member of our hockey team.
