Mercy High School | Marlins | GIRLS
Libby Bartels epitomizes our school values, she is a leader on and off the ice. In the classroom, she maintains a 3.9 GPA on a 4.0 scale and also coordinates Mercy’s student tutoring program as an Officer for the National Honor Society. Many parents have told me Libby sets a great example for their daughters to work hard in school and on the ice. Giving back is a big part of who she is, her community involvement includes refereeing sled hockey games, helping with the MORC Stars gifted hockey team, mentoring girls who now play for her youth team, starting a used hockey equipment drive to provide free gear to kids, being a leader at girls try hockey for free events, helping at a United Way kids lunch program and being a part of Mercy’s annual day of caring.
Libby is recognized by her coaches and teammates as a leader, she is a two-year captain on the Mercy ice hockey and lacrosse teams. She is also a standout hockey player, she is our school’s all-time leading scorer. She displays outstanding will and character in every situation. She was a key player as a freshman on our state championship team and as a sophomore, she scored two goals in the final minutes of the state finals to tie the game at two before assisting on the championship goal in overtime. Her junior year gave her an opportunity to demonstrate her leadership in other ways when she broke her wrist and came down with mononucleosis during the final four weeks of our season. Even though she couldn’t play, when she was allowed to return to the rink she was there for the team, providing support, cheering and whatever else was needed. Libby is smiling every time she comes to the rink or team workouts. She works hard at her game and she works hard to help her teammates as well.
Another example of the type of person Libby is, last fall she was driving to a friends house when she was the first to see an overturned vehicle in her neighborhood. When she stopped her car, she saw a girl pinned under the vehicle. She ran to the vehicle and with the help of two men who heard the crash from their house, they lifted the car so the girl could be pulled to safety. The girl and her family were grateful and to this day, I haven’t heard Libby mention it to anyone else. She made the decision to help someone in need and she did so in a private way.
Libby Bartels embodies the hockey spirit, loving the game and appreciating all who play it. She is the Mercy High School nominee for the Hobey Baker High School Character Award.
