Countdown to Hobey:

Laura McMennamin

2024 | Maryland | COED

Howard-Atholton-Mt. Hebron Hammers | Hammers | COED

Ms. Laura McMennamin is a devoted daughter and sister, a high school student committed to academic achievement, and an extremely talented hockey player who is dedicated to the sport. Laura is a four-year member of the Mt. Hebron Ice Vikes and Hammers ice hockey teams, and a three-year member of the Maryland Student Hockey League-Howard County girls ice hockey team. Laura’s skill and commanding presence on the ice proved her to be a critical member of her high school teams. She time and time again showed her strength, determination and mastery of the game, which brought her high school teams to victory. She set the example for others to follow, and she gave 100% of herself every time she was on the ice. As a member of the Washington Pride U19 AAA girls hockey team, she was a stand-out player, which made her an easy choice to be a co-captain on her team.

Where Laura excels on the hockey rink, she excels even more in the classroom. She is a member of the National Honors Society and the National Art Honors Society, and she is an active member of the 2024 student board at Mt. Hebron. Laura has successfully taken no fewer than ten advanced placement courses, and she currently holds a 4.8 GPA. She was recently accepted into Wesleyan University, where she will study computer science. Furthermore, her leadership, advanced knowledge of the game and her athletic skill landed her a coveted spot on their NCAA DIII women’s hockey team.

Despite her demanding course workload, her AAA travel hockey commitments, and other activities, Ms. McMennamin still finds the time to volunteer by helping at hockey camps and food drives. She is an example of selfless service.

For Laura, playing hockey is a family affair; her most meaningful high school hockey memory was when she scored her first high school goal against a rival high school in her freshman year, That goal was assisted by her older brother. When asked why she plays hockey; “I started playing hockey after I saw my brother playing hockey for the first time. I decided that I wanted to try and after that I fell in love with the sport. It is an amazing sport to play and the moment I step on the ice, all my worries go away. It has been a wonderful experience to grow up with and I have made so many close friends along the way.”

The Hammers team was very lucky to have her as a member of it. Without hesitation, it is with honor and privilege to recommend Ms. Laura McMennamin for the Hobey Baker award.
