James embodies the qualifications of this award: excellence, character, and a love of the game. Few goalies have James’s physical ability– he is incredibly athletic but plays his position with poise and style that sets him apart – but you wouldn’t know it. He is humble, diligent, and eager for a challenge or to learn something new. James, known as Jimbo to his teammates, is our starter, yet he approaches his position as a battery mate, encouraging and supporting his fellow senior goalkeepers. This year, his love of the game, character, and excellence was most noticeably visible in the days following the passing of his father, Jimmy. James remained steadfast in his commitment to our team, never missing practice and leading us to victory in our next game. He often leads our team in the handshake line, just like Hobey. His coaches and teammates love and respect him. For these reasons, James Heber is our Hobey Baker Character Award winner.
