Henry Thackeray embodies the values the game teaches : coach-ability, strength of character, integrity, commitment, teamwork, community building and outstanding sportsmanship. He is also a model student athlete, who is a current member of National Honors Society. He is currently pursuing a Honors Diploma and recognition as an AP Scholar.
Several teachers recognized his maturity, integrity, leadership abilities, and character . One teacher shared that “Henry models high moral character, respect and kindness in his life by encouraging other students to make good decisions and fulfill their potential”. Another teacher expressed that “Henry’s character is second to none” adding that “he has a relentless positive attitude in the class room and makes people around him better .” At school Henry is co-president of ‘The Bear Den’, encouraging students to become involved with sports and charity events .
The coaching staff also recongizes Henry’s selflessness , leadership qualities, superb hockey skills , and selected him to be one of the team’s captains . Last year, Henry was an integral player in the team’s State Championship journey with his exceptional play on defense . As a player he received a number of All CHC league honors . He was selected 2nd team All Ohio Defenseman, which is the most prestigious award he has received to date.
In the community, Henry has been involved serving a number of volunteer activities. He has coached various youth pond hockey teams and worked with inclusive hockey programming for children with special needs. Henry also volunteered at a food pantry and secured food for donation. Finally, he led our hockey team’s toy drive for donations to Nationwide Children’s Hospital. These acts of service highlight the character and integrity that the coaches know and see from Henry on and off the ice.
In closing, one of Henry’s teachers expressed why he should be nominated : “…what sets him apart is his selflessness and character. His positive energy and kindness brightens any room that he enters, making him a brilliant presence in the lives of those around them. The combination of classroom success, coupled with his hockey talent and his strong character make Henry the definition of a role model and student athlete.” We feel that Henry Thackeray embodies what the Hobey Baker award stands for, and we are honored to nominate him.
