Gridska Flynn is a senior captain of the Scituate (MA) High girls varsity hockey team. Gridska is a consummate leader and teammate, on and off-ice. A strong and independent young woman, Gridska recognized well before our season began that our team, now including 8th graders, would need special leadership to underscore what TEAM is all about. With a 14-player roster, we have asked much of our 6 new players. They clearly appreciated Gridska’s extra guidance along the way.
Gridska’s citizenship has shined as she has led our team in community service efforts. Coming from a family with a military background, she recognizes the importance of honoring our nation’s veterans. Gridska served in our community’s annual Veterans Day luncheon and ceremony. She also, with team-mates during the holidays, visited with Janet White, a 94-year-old US Navy veteran. Additionally, Gridska has led team service initiatives including fall clean ups for a local community service property – Susan Phippen House of Giving.
On the ice, Gridska gives nothing less than 100%, while serving as the model for effort, coachability, sportsmanship and perseverance. Unfortunately, Gridska’s season was paused for 3 weeks due to an injury. Recognizing her limitations in helping her team-mates on the ice during this time, Gridska joined the coaching staff on the bench for games and provided much value with both encouragement and assessment of our team play.
Assistant Coach Mike Lovering and I have been honored to coach Gridska Flynn and to watch her demonstrate what it truly means to be a Scituate Sailor!
