Greg Schneider
2016 | Virigina | BOYS
Bishop Dennis J. O’Connell | Knights | BOYS
Following in his older brothers’ footsteps, Greg started skating when he was 3. He first played on his father’s team of 3-6 year olds, the Mighty Caps, who met Sunday mornings at the outdoor rink at the Reston Town Center. At age 5, he played house league at the Ashburn Ice House and the following year was selected to play for Ashburn’s travel program. He has played for the Ashburn Xtreme travel program for the past 12 years and is currently on the Ashburn Xtreme U18AA team.
During his freshman year, Greg played both Varsity Ice Hockey and JV Lacrosse at Bishop O’Connell. For the first time, he was able to play on the ice for two years with his older brother Ian, who played for DJO his junior and senior years. Greg has played Varsity Ice Hockey for DJO all four years. This year, he felt honored to be named co-captain of the team. Playing a varsity sport for his high school, and developing close friendships with his teammates over the past four years, has been the highlight of his time at Bishop O’Connell.
Greg has enjoyed playing for coach Flip because he encouraged Greg to play to his strengths, primarily the physical side of the game. Greg scored 12 goals and had 23 assists over his four year career and his aggressive physical presence was always felt by opponents and appreciated by his teammates. Greg show excellent leadership both on the ice and off the ice. He was always confident and composed even in those games the team may have been down a goal or two. As Captain, his confidence and composure overflowed to his teammates and was instrumental in several comebacks. Off the ice Greg also excelled in the classroom, especially in Mathematics, registering an outstand score on the ACT.
Greg has been a member of the Young Men’s Executive Club at DJO for the past three years and has also been a NVSHL scholar-athlete for the last two years. As member of the Men’s Executive Club he was involved in the annual “dress for success” program, which was a clothing drive to less fortunate help men acquire professional clothing for job interviews and for new jobs. He plans to study business finance in college, just like his father did. While he hasn’t made his final decision, he has been accepted at his top choice school, University of Miami, Florida.
