Danny Popowics
2017 | Indiana | BOYS
Carmel Icehounds Gold | Icehounds | BOYS
I have had the absolute pleasure of being Danny’s hockey coach for the last four seasons. He is a very special young man, who excels in most everything he puts his mind to, yet at the same time, carries himself with levels of poise, modesty and maturity that are very uncommon for his age. Danny represents the ideal student-athlete and within the hockey community, truly defines the meaning of the Hobey Baker High School Character Award.
On the ice, Danny has been an integral member of three straight state championship teams. As a freshman in the state championship game, Danny scored two goals, including the game winner in double overtime, to lead the 2014 Icehound Blue team to the Class 1A State Championship. As a member of the Gold team, he was a key contributor on the 2015 Class 5A and 2016 Class 4A State Championship teams. As a senior this year, Danny was unanimously elected to by his peers as Gold Team Captain, and he has led his team into position to compete for the state championship, as well as another team academic (Schallert) award. Danny leads by example with his work ethic– not only in games when everyone is watching, but also in practice, when many are not. He is 100% committed to his team; I cannot remember a practice or game Danny has missed since I have been coaching him. He always respects teammates, opponents, officials, coaches – and the game. In support of this commentary – objectively speaking, Danny is normally in the 60-70+ point range per season, which is a great individual accomplishment in a 60 game season. However, as consistent as he is producing offense, he is equally consistent in playing the game the right way – within the rules – he averages single digits in penalties taken annually, a testament to his sportsmanship.
Academically, Danny is carrying a 4.67 GPA this year while carrying primarily all AP classes. He has consistently performed at levels well above 4.0 his entire high school career. As a freshman, Danny was a key contributor to the 2014 Icehound Blue team winning the Schallert Team Academic Award with a 3.63 GPA – a first for the Carmel Program. Danny also acts as a peer tutor – mentoring incoming students at Carmel High School. In addition, on a more personal note, many are not aware that Danny has a brother with special needs who relies heavily on him every day. Danny drives his brother to school, makes sure he gets to his classes and helps him with his homework.
Danny is a very well liked and respected young man, who embraces challenge and responsibility. He is a natural leader and all around great person. I cannot speak highly enough of him. He incredibly deserving of this award.
