Our nominee this year, Connor Jacoby, has distinguished himself in his academic and athletic pursuits as well as something additional that is perhaps even more laudable. He is a standout on his high school cross country team and has been a leader on both his soccer and basketball teams for multiple years. He was elected by his peers to serve as Class President for this academic year.

But the most underrated and unheralded role in sports is that of the support player. Connor’s brother was born with spina bifida, and Connor’s entire life has been that of a supportive brother, friend, and teammate. It doesn’t stop there though – as an able-bodied player, he was one of the founding members of the Hurricanes SLED Hockey organization which provides players of all abilities the opportunity to play hockey. In addition to being there for his brother, Connor plays that role for everyone on our SLED Hockey team.

In SLED hockey there is a lot of preparation needed to hit the ice ready to play. Equipment needs to be conditioned, fixed, and fitted for the players with special requirements. The cost of SLED is significantly more than stand up hockey which requires fund raising. Since the pool of athletes is smaller, awareness and recruiting are mandatory with multiple events every year. Connor’s dedication and consistency in participating and leading these types of activities is simply outstanding. He is an example of selfless contribution, service, and positive attitude. He has helped to create memories for all of our players that will truly change their lives forever.

I can’t think of a better candidate to represent the memory and legacy of Hobey Baker. Please accept this nomination of Connor Jacoby and let me know if there is anything further you need to approve.
