I am writing to recommend Charlotte Goings for the Hobey Baker Award for the Metro-South Phoenix. As Charlotte’s varsity hockey coach over the past 4 years, I have had the privilege of witnessing her develop into an extraordinary young lady both on and off the ice.

Charlotte embodies the essence of the Hobey Baker Award: coachability, character, integrity, commitment, teamwork, community building and sportsmanship. Her dedication to these principles is evident in every aspect of her involvement in the sport. Charlotte has a team-first attitude and consistently prioritizes the team’s success over personal accomplishments. She is an unselfish player with more than twice as many assists as anyone else on the team. Charlotte plays just as hard in the defensive zone as she does in the offensive zone, and she is just as reliable on a back-check as she is in a zone-entry. Charlotte is a true leader and was voted captain unanimously by both her coaches and her teammates. She leads with integrity and sets an example of hard-work, dedication, and commitment to all her teammates. She has a knack for holding others accountable without being pushy. Charlotte is a perpetual rally-point for her teammates who love her. She is always a net positive.

Beyond her contributions to hockey, Charlotte is engaged in a variety of extracurricular activities within her school and community which highlight her commitment to the same values mentioned above. Charlotte’s non-hockey leadership commitments include being a captain of the lacrosse team, managing the girls varsity soccer team, serving as a Red Cross Blood Donor Ambassador, acting as president the Outdoors Club, participating in the Antiracism Student Interest Group, mentoring freshmen, and serving as committee secretary for Community Conduct–a student government role aimed at promoting student voices in disciplinary matters at school. Charlotte is an employee at Adventure Kids where she supervises children at an after-school program, and she has also collaborated with the Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sport at the University of Minnesota, collecting data and contributing to a report tracking the number of female head coaches coaching women’s NCAA Division 1 teams. This impressive array of involvement highlights Charlotte’s commitment not only to personal growth but also to the betterment of diverse groups within her community.

Charlotte’s academic achievements speak for themselves. She has an incredible GPA at a school well-known for its academic rigor and seriousness.

In summary, Charlotte Goings is an outstanding individual who personifies the spirit of the Hobey Baker Award. Her dedication to teamwork, leadership, and community service makes her a deserving candidate for the scholarship.
