Brianna Castro
2014 | Rhode Island | GIRLS
Mount St Charles Academy | Mounties | GIRLS
Brianna has been the captain of the team for two seasons. Going into her senior year, Bri has matured and has grown into a leader. For most offensively talented players, senior year would be all about stats and being in the spotlight. With a small team this season and many injuries, Bri (and her teammates) have had to play multiple positions and many minutes per game. When our goalie went down this season, it would have been easy for Bri to let someone else play goalie. There is no reward for putting on the pads for the first time and having 13 goals go past you, in two games. This could have been deflating for Bri and the team. Instead, it has brought everyone closer. Bri learned that being in someones else’s shoe (skates) is not as easy as it seems. As stated earlier we have a small team. Four of our players are new to the game. Mount has been to the finals 11 out of 12 years. Our team this year may be the only Mount team not to make the playoffs. It would have been easy for a senior to lose hope and interest. Not Bri, she has rallied her captains and the team has become a team. I could have easily nominated Bri for hockey skills, but it is her leadership, her love of team, her respect for the game, her maturity, and her love for her school that made this an easy decision for her nomination. Hockey is only a part of what we do, being leaders is what we want to excel in…that is Bri this season.
