Brian Romola is a four-time Varsity player for the Briar Woods High School hockey club in Ashburn, VA. From Day One, Brian has quietly lead by example those attributes and traits of the Hobey Baker Character Award…on and off the ice. In his early years when he was an underclassman, on a team dominated by loud and vocal upperclassman, Brian demonstrated his character by performing…on every shift…at every game. As he grew older and became more comfortable with his role as one of the Captains, his still lead by example on and off the ice, but he also spoke up – to the team and to us coaches…on things he as well as we needed to do to continue getting better while we were striving for our second consecutive championship since the hockey club stated in 2007. He has shown to be unselfish, unpretentious, and a great teammate. After playing forward mainly for his first three years, he willingly accepted the coach’s decision to move him back to Defense for the betterment of the team. He gives 100% and hustles non-stop every shift… He exudes great character in our sport and represents the best we want in our kids. Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of coaching him during his youth years knows he is extraordinarily easy to coach. You tell him what to do, he listens intently and does it. What more can a coach ask for? Besides demonstrating his performance on the ice, he has also be able to show the ultimate display of good sportsmanship and respect towards team, parents and officials for all four years. He has never had one incident as a player and has gone out of his way to show the team how they should act by leading by example. He has used the same traits and character in school and in his free time where he has volunteered the last couple years for the local Fire Department. Lastly, Brian is also a multi-year All Academic All Star as well. As a result of his hard work in school, he will be attending College in the Fall. Briar Woods High School is honored to have Brian Romola play for our club and even more proud to nominate him as our representative for the 2013-14 Hobey Baker Character Award.
