Dear Hobey Baker Committee Members;

I’ve known Anne Beck for about 10 years now and I’ve seen her grow both as a young woman and as a hockey player and leader. Anne is a 3.98 student and a member of our National Honor Society here at Grandville and ranks 57 of 415 fellow classmates.
Some reflections on Anne Beck:
4-5 seasons ago at the Grandville Middle School office it started with a statement to Mrs. Breazeale from a skinny blonde-haired girl saying I’m going to play for Coach B one day on his Varsity Team. From that statement to this moment Anne lives by her word and her actions speak for themselves.
Another moment that stands out is Anne’s commitment to improvement. 6:30am, Monday through Friday, during her ENTIRE freshman year, Anne was there to greet me in the GHS weight room and put in a daily workout. From that moment on I knew we had a future starting goaltender and more importantly a leader by example, she is now our Captain.
So much of Hobey Baker’s Legacy is about the impact he left on those he came into contact with and those who were inspired by his character and his play. In my 35 years as a head coach I’ve rarely come in contact with a young person who has motivated and inspired more young people (especially young girls) in our community than Anne Beck. In her 3 varsity seasons she has drawn numbers of young girls into our sport and has the admiration of all who have witnessed her poise between the pipes. The young girls all want to Be Like Captain Anne! With her traditional understated demeanor Anne has become the first and only starting female goalie to lead an MHSAA men’s varsity hockey team to the division 1 frozen 4. I’ve witnessed first-hand the impact this blonde-haired and somewhat introverted young lady has had on her classmates and young young people. Everyone cheers for Anne, as her story is as unique as it is inspirational. People love it when goodness and character prevail.
Recently Anne has committed to attending NCAA D3 Hockey power, Wisconsin-Steven’s Point this fall.
Please strongly consider Anne Beck with my highest recommendation for the Hobey Baker Character Award.
