Countdown to Hobey:

Andrew Alvanas

2023 | Rhode Island | BOYS

Portsmouth High School Varsity Hockey Team | Patriots | BOYS

Andrew clearly stands out as the Portsmouth hockey player that best exemplifies the ideals of Hobey Baker.

Among the team’s best players, good sportsmanship and fair play are the hallmarks of his game. In the four years of his high school career, a span of 50 regular season games, he has been called for only two minor penalties. He naturally brings out the best in his teammates’ performance and every player on the ice is better when skating with Andrew.

Always seeking to improve his value to the team, he is exceptionally receptive to the coaching staff’s directions, and to their suggestions as he continually strives to improve his already remarkable hockey skills.

Recognized for his leadership abilities, he was selected to serve as team captain this season. In that role he has done an outstanding job of building team cohesion and fostering a positive outlook for his squad through both adversity and success.

Andrew is also much more than just a hockey player and his drive for excellence extends well beyond the rink. He sets the pace in the classroom and his academic prowess is clearly evident as an Honor Roll student. As a junior he was named Student of the Year for video broadcast journalism.

Civic minded, he has been as his class representative to the school’s student council all four years of high school and served as the president of that body for two years. He volunteers as an assistant coach with the local youth hockey program where he passes his skills on to the youngest hockey players. He has participated in a number of area beach clean-up efforts to help both protect the environment and maintain the natural beauty of the shorelines.

Andrew is an exceptional choice to receive this award. He embodies all of the qualities the name Hobey Baker, and the organization that bears his name, stands for.
