Wilson Guse exemplifies the values that define the Hobey Baker Award: character, excellence, sportsmanship, and a genuine love for the game. As captain of our varsity hockey team, Wilson consistently demonstrates leadership, effort, and integrity, leaving every practice and game better than he found it. He epitomizes our team culture—bringing an “effort of 10,” positive energy, and “good juice” that lifts his teammates and creates an environment where everyone can thrive. He celebrates the successes of others, encourages his peers with high fives and words of support, and models what it means to be a committed and unselfish teammate.

Wilson’s leadership extends beyond hockey. He is also captain of the varsity baseball team, where his work ethic, integrity, and positive influence mirror what he brings to the ice. In the classroom, I had the privilege of teaching Wilson in math, and he consistently approached challenges with focus, persistence, and collaboration, helping his peers succeed while striving to improve himself.

Off the ice, Wilson contributes meaningfully to his community. He participates in Andrew’s Bravery Box, helping his team shop for toys for children facing difficult medical procedures using funds raised at one of our hockey games. He also serves as a mentor through Blaine Youth Hockey, investing time to teach younger players, foster their skills, and model leadership, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Through these efforts, Wilson helps cultivate a stronger, more positive hockey community, creating a greater State of Hockey for all.

Wilson’s passion, leadership, and dedication make him an outstanding candidate for the Hobey Baker High School Character Award. He exemplifies the ideals of coachability, integrity, teamwork, and community building while consistently inspiring those around him—both on and off the ice.
