Cael Shanley has been selected as our Hobey Baker recipient this season because of his character, his on ice work ethic, and his actions off the ice as well.
This award embodies an athlete who represents far more than goals, assists, saves, or wins on the scoreboard. The Hobey Baker Character Award is given to a player who exemplifies integrity, sportsmanship, leadership, and respect both on and off the ice.
Cael is the kind of player every coach hopes to have and every teammate wants beside them. He shows up every day ready to work, ready to compete, and ready to make the people around him better. Whether it’s a hard practice, a close game, or a tough loss, Cael carries himself with humility and composure.
On the ice, Cael leads by example. He plays the game the right way—with effort, discipline, and respect for opponents and officials alike. He understands that hockey is not just about individual success, but about commitment to the team. He celebrates his teammates’ achievements as much as his own and never hesitates to put the team first.
Off the ice, Cael’s character is just as strong. He treats everyone with respect, holds himself accountable, and represents the varsity hockey program with pride. Younger players look up to him not because he demands it, but because he earns it through his actions.
