I met Marccus when he was 11 years old playing hockey in our youth program. I was at one of our local outdoor rinks (Portman) enjoying a beautiful Duluth winter day. I noticed that he wasn’t afraid to hop in with the older kids and he was more than happy to help out the one that were younger than him. This is something that is quintessential Marccus. Fast Forward to present day and Marccus has developed not only that confidence he used to play with the older kids back at the rink but also his willingness to work with younger kids. We started a Mite Mentor Program this year, in which our HS Players go to the local rinks and link up with one of the Mite teams to provide mentorship to the younger players in our program. Marccus has not only been one of our best mentors, he has been instrumental in getting the program rolled out. He has been instrumental in taking the lead at every possible opportunity.

Marccus Anttila is a very fine young man who takes pride in everything he does. He is a leader in every sense. There is nothing he isn’t willing to do himself. He is constantly the last guy off the bus when return from road trips making sure the bus is clean. He is the first to volunteer when one of his teammates needs anything. I have never seen him push his way to the front of the line “because Senior’s go first”. To the contrary, he’s usually at the end after everyone else has been through.

Marccus’s character speaks for itself based on his actions, how he carries himself and how he treats others. I will be very sad when Marccus is no longer participating in our hockey program. I look forward to working with him and his leadership everyday. I hope you consider Marccus a legitimate contender for the 2025-2026 Hobey Baker Award. He is worthy and I know he will make you as proud as he does all of us here in Duluth.
