Countdown to Hobey:

Gabriel Shepard

2026 | Montana |

Missoula High School Varsity | Bruins |

On-Ice Excellence and Statistical Dominance
Gabe’s statistics speak volumes about his caliber as a player. He has led the entire state of Montana in scoring for two consecutive seasons—a remarkable achievement that underscores his consistency and dominance. This season alone, through just 14 games, he has accumulated 46 points, including 27 goals and 19 assists. To put this in perspective, his nearest competitor has 35 points. This 11-point gap is not merely a number; it represents the substantial impact Gabe has on every game he plays.
What makes Gabe truly special, however, is that he is far more than a scorer. He is a complete, two-way player who excels in all aspects of the game. Gabe is a gritty, tenacious competitor with an exceptional hockey IQ. He is our go-to player in crucial moments—the player we want on the ice when the game is on the line. His ability to finish plays and put the puck in the net is matched only by his defensive responsibility and his willingness to match up against opponents’ best players. He shuts down top lines while simultaneously creating offense, a rare combination that separates good players from elite ones.
Leadership That Elevates a Team
His teammates recognized his leadership qualities by voting him team captain this season, after he served as an alternate captain during his junior year. This peer recognition speaks to the respect he commands in the locker room and the example he sets every day.
As captain, Gabe leads by example through his work ethic, dedication, and competitive spirit. He holds himself and his teammates to the highest standards, both on and off the ice.
Character and Sportsmanship
What truly distinguishes Gabe as Hobey Baker material is his character. He maintains a perfect 4.0 GPA while taking a rigorous academic schedule that includes AP Calculus, AP Physics, and AP Statistics, in addition to dual enrollment courses at the University of Montana. He has earned Academic All-State honors and is an active member of the National Honor Society, where he tutors younger students in mathematics.
Gabe also serves as captain of Sentinel High School’s varsity golf team, earning All-State and All-Conference honors while helping his team compete at the highest level. His ability to excel in multiple sports while maintaining academic excellence demonstrates exceptional time management, discipline, and commitment.
Beyond athletics and academics, Gabe contributes to his community through volunteer work at the Ronald McDonald House of Montana and the Missoula Food Bank. He understands that being a leader means giving back and using his platform to make a positive difference.
On the ice, Gabe competes with intensity but always with respect for the game, his teammates, opponents, and officials. He plays hard but fair, embodying the sportsmanship that Montana hockey values.
