Sophia Jansen is a shining example of the Hobey Baker ideal that “Character Builds Excellence.” Selected by her coach as the Charleston Ice Raiders’ senior honoree, Sophia embodies integrity, coachability, outstanding sportsmanship, and community spirit—both on and off the ice.
Sophia’s hockey journey is a testament to perseverance and passion. She began playing hockey just seven years ago and, through determination and hard work, has proudly represented multiple teams, including 14U Co-Ed Travel, 16U and 19U AA Girls Travel, and the Charleston Ice Raiders High School team for the past three seasons. Her growth as a player mirrors her growth as a leader—one who earns respect through effort, attitude, and example rather than tenure alone.
Sophia consistently demonstrates integrity and a positive attitude. She approaches every practice and game with focus, humility, and gratitude for the opportunity to compete. Whether in moments of success or challenge, she remains encouraging, composed, and committed to doing what is best for the team.
Highly coachable, Sophia actively seeks feedback and applies it with intention. She listens, learns, and leads through action—raising the standard for herself and those around her. Her work ethic and openness to instruction make her a trusted presence on the ice and in the locker room.
Outstanding sportsmanship is one of Sophia’s defining qualities. She competes fiercely while always respecting teammates, opponents, and officials. She understands that how the game is played matters just as much as the outcome, and she represents the Charleston Ice Raiders with class and pride at all times.
Beyond hockey, Sophia exemplifies community spirit and academic excellence. She attends Summerville High School, where she is an active member of the HOSA Club and Spanish Club, and volunteers with the Dorchester County EMS Explorers Program—demonstrating her commitment to service and leadership beyond the rink. She will graduate this spring with a Diploma of Distinction and numerous academic achievements.
Sophia will continue her pursuit of excellence at Clemson University this fall, majoring in Biological Sciences on a pre-med track, and plans to continue her hockey career with the Clemson Women’s Hockey Team. Her dedication to athletics, academics, and service reflects a young leader who understands the responsibility and privilege of representing something greater than herself.
