Matt is one of the players that every coach wants on their team. He is selfless, hard-working, a great teammate, and most importantly coachable. All of these terms are part of the Hobey Baker definition so it made sense to have Matt be the recipient for our team. I have had the privilege of coaching Matt for four years, and have admired his work ethic each and every year. He is always the hardest worker on the ice, and because of that he has made himself a very successful hockey player.
His team first mentality has made him a great leader and captain for our team. Not a lot of seniors would willingly change positions in the middle of the season. Matt made the change to defense part way through the season because we felt it would help the team the most. When approached about the idea Matt was all about it and couldn’t wait to get going.
Matt is a great leader for not just the high school, but our entire program. He refs youth hockey, volunteers at practices, and is a player a lot of younger players look up to. His energy, sportsmanship, and leadership are second to none and that is why Matt is very deserving of this award.
