Sam Shapiro
2018 | Maryland | COED
Urbana High School | Hawks | COED
Each year since 2003, a single senior hockey player from each participating high school is selected by his or her coach to be honored by teammates and celebrated by the school and the community for outstanding individual performance on and off the ice. Sam Shapiro was nominated this hockey season by his peers as a Team Captain, and it was well deserved. Although quiet at times, he knew the right times to speak up in a positive way in the locker room, on the bench and on the ice. Sam’s attitude and effort could easily be instilled in others due to his work ethic and teaching skills. Along with his desire to work on his hockey skills each year, he also sacrificed his personal glory, statistics, and accolades for the betterment of the team. With strong team leadership characteristics, Sam has shown leadership in school, on the ice, in the locker room, and outside the rink. Competitors respect him and his team honors him. Although quiet-spoken, Sam is very serious when it comes to competition, discipline, and respect. He has mentored many players on the JV team as well and regularly played in JV games to play and support. Sam is an outstanding student on and off the ice. His positive character traits and determination, strong work ethic and leadership style, makes Sam a wonderful nominee for this distinguished award. Sam is a strong representative for the Hobey Baker Award, and also the Urbana Hawks ice hockey team.
Getting this award is an honor to receive and an honor that any coach should be proud to give. It represents Character, Commitment, Teamwork, Persistence, Selflessness, Academic Excellence and Sportsmanship and a “Team before meâ€_x009d_ attitude. I am honored to present Sam Shapiro with this years Hobey Baker Award.
