I have observed John in many different situations over the past five or six years that showcase many of the qualities that we are looking for in a Hobey Baker Awardee. Each player is expected to perform on the ice as well as the classroom and display leadership and sportsmanship. John excels in all areas. In addition to a heavy academic load, John is a leader in Sea Cadets and has successfully balanced all of these requirements with his hockey schedule.
Most importantly, John’s interactions with players, coaches and officials clearly shows a leader who makes good decisions and one who the others look to for leadership, so much so that I selected him as a team captain after his Sophomore season. He has been a very strong mature leader this season, keeping a team with players from four high schools focused and together on and off the ice.
