Countdown to Hobey:

Joseph “Mac” Lyons

2016 | Colorado | BOYS

Standley Lake High School | Gators | BOYS

I would like to nominate Mac for the High school Hobey Baker Award.  He is a senior from Horizon High School and plays for me at Standley Lake High School since his school doesn’t have a ice hockey team.
Mac has the attitude you want in a athlete on and off the ice.  He was our backbone on the blue line.  He was on the ice every other shift and played on PP & PK.  We had a young team this year and he always was positive with the younger players and always encouraging them and never said anything negative.  During practice and games he always pumped up his teammates up no matter if we were winning or losing.   Mac also led the team in minutes on the ice with minimal PIMS.  He has respect for the game/players/coaches and encouraged our coaching staff to help him become a better player on and off the ice.  The younger players look up to him and always were asking him advice.  The other seniors also respected Mac on the way he played the game and treated his teammates.  Besides being the leader of the team Mac is a outstanding person in the community and with the younger players of our association(Hyland Hills).  He volunteered to go to the U8 practices and help the kids.  I have had several U8 players tell me how cool it was having Mac be at their practice and they cant wait to play on the team when they get old enough.  Mac also volunteered at the City of Westminster Fire Department from 2010-2014 with the Active Shooter Response and Santa Program.  From 2007-2011 he volunteered at City of Thornton Senior Center with senior lunch fair/sunset suppers/breakfast with Santa.

If that was not enough on his plate he achieved to be on CHSAA Academic All State First Team (2015 + 2016)
Jeffco Academic Athletic Honor Roll 2015
Lettered 2014-2016
He will graduate with a outstanding 4.16 GPA

It was a honor getting to know this young man and having him play for me this season.  There is no one more deserving of this award than Mac.
