Northwest Ice Hockey is proud to select Jason Steinberg as its 2019 – 2020 Hobey Baker High School Character Award winner. Jason has consistently demonstrated and embraced those values and characteristics this award recognizes.
For seven years on the ice, Jason constantly learned from his coaches and his teammates alike. He never hesitated to perform whatever role he was asked to complete on the ice (defense, penalty killing, power play, etc.), was the ultimate team player, and continually demonstrated to his teammates a “can doâ€_x009d_ attitude. As the Senior Caption of the Northwest Varsity Ice Hockey team, Jason routinely demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship both on and off the ice towards players, coaches and officials alike. Other coaches have commented to our coaching staff on Jason’s poise, leadership and sportsmanship.
On the ice, Jason was the ever-present leader who epitomizes the great Rod Langway and is Northwest’s “Secretary of Defenseâ€_x009d_. Like Langway, Jason led by example on the ice regardless of whether it is a practice or a game demanding greatness from himself. Jason’s on-ice production also earned him Montgomery Hockey Conference First Team All-Conference honors as well as Maryland Student Hockey League All-Star honors. Jason also represented the state of Maryland at the National High School Showcase tournament. Most importantly, Jason scored two goals in leading his team to the MHC D2 Conference Championship.
While his on-ice values and character were noteworthy, Jason’s strength of character, integrity, commitment and community building were best demonstrated in his off-ice activities. Throughout his high school academic career, Jason took on an ever challenging course load where he put in the necessary work and study to maintain nearly straight A’s since his freshman year. As a National Math Honor Society member and an ACES Scholar, Jason’s commitment to his studies resulted in a 3.9 Grade Point Average and acceptance into several Division I Universities. Jason did not hesitate to lead by example in the classroom whether in leading a group exercise or explaining a complex problem so others may learn in subjects such as AP Physics, AP Calculus and AP Statistics. Jason was also a leader in his Community where he made time to coach youth ice hockey, served as a swimming life guard and volunteered at a Montgomery County Elementary school.
Most importantly, Jason is a young scholar athlete of high moral character, whose positive attitude is infectious and builds confidence in his actions and his teammates. Whether on or off the ice, Jason demonstrated the values and character Hobey Baker demonstrated in academics, in athletics and as a squadron leader in WWI
