As a key member of the U18 Charlotte Rush Premier team this year, Matias was very simply put “a quiet leaderâ€_x009d_. All of the players look to Matias as a calming and positive influence. He leads by example.
I can’t think of a time where he missed a practice or a game. Matias is a hard working dedicated individual, dedicated to his personal development, the team and his team mates. Matias is primarily a forward, and prefers being a forward, but to support the team, he was willing to play defense for a good portion of the year for a variety of reasons. He understood the team needed him to do this and he did it.
Matias was the player on our team who showed the utmost respect for the coaching staff. He was willing to listen to ideas and offer up some of his own as well. Again, showing his Positive Attitude, Sportsmanship and Leadership characteristics.
Matias has great hockey sense and skills and all-in-all he is just a well-rounded young man, both on and off the ice. He doesn’t let the emotional highs get him to high nor the lows to low, he maintains his composure. Humble would be a good word to describe Matias, he is very coachable, I would say a coach’s dream player.
Hockey has been an important part of his life as it has given him so many positive life lessons along the way. He, in turn, tries to spend time helping others when he can. Matias worked at the YMCA as a camp counselor last summer making sure younger children had a fun and safe environment as they progressed through the eight week camp program. He also volunteered as a Youth Ambassador for The Sandbox Organization in 2019. The Sandbox provides support to children in the midst of family or personal crisis. He attended various events to celebrate the children and families involved as well as participated in fundraising activities through this last year. He also participated in smaller community based events as needed, including neighborhood food drives and sandwich making; and basketball camp coaching and snack bar volunteer at the Weddington Church during various seasons.
