“Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens his friends.â€_x009d_ This is the essence of Chance DeBolt. Chance has a long hockey résumé. He has always demonstrated the highest level of skill and character. In preparing for the inaugural season of the Calvary Christian Academy hockey team, Chance took a risk joining the team — A team that presented an uncertain prospect. With a roster of only 14, the CCA team would present a challenge for the best players. To be successful, the team would require an investment of time, and energy both on and off the ice. Leadership was key to team success. Selected as the team ‘s first captain, Chance upheld his commitments to both his travel team and the CCA team, putting forth a record-setting season in both goals scored, assists, overall points, all while leading the league in points scored and his team in hat tricks. Even with this success, Chance remains humble. Preferring to pass the puck during scoring opportunities in order to help his teammates.
Chance demonstrates excellence as he distinguishes himself in his on-ice performance and his sportsmanship. He has drawn only two penalties this season. This is a reflection of his desire to chirp with his stick and skates.
This humility is, in part, based in his love of the game of hockey. He is a selfless leader, preferring to help others grow in their skill. He was challenged to encourage and help his teammates grow as individuals and a team. This he did, even with a number of brand-new players on the team. This was evident following the first goal of the newest hockey players on the team. Chance was among the first to charge across the ice to congratulate them.
Chance has a way of exercising soft influence on those around him. His positive attitude is infectious, and has guided CCA through an amazing season. He celebrates the successes of others and continues to seek out avenues to help others that are new to the game. His humility and character, is also rooted in his deep faith, which is evident to even the casual observer. Chance is driven by his favorite passage of Scripture: Jeremiah 29:11. “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. plans to give you hope and a future.â€_x009d_ This foundation has fueled his character which has been noted by teammates, opponents, officials and others. He is respected by everyone that has been blessed to know him. Looking ahead to college and other opportunities that may arise, Chance will, no doubt, continue to advance his skill while he sharpens those around him – helping them grow in skill and character.
