Charlie Thackeray exemplifies all the characteristics for which the Hobey Baker High School Character Award is presented .
As a two sport varsity athlete (hockey and water polo ), Charlie has excelled in the classroom . He is a member of the National Honors Society maintaining a weighted GPA of 3.96 . He has successfully completed a number of AP courses, IB business , as well as 6 honors courses . In our Capital Hockey Conference he has earned First Team- All Academic honors for the past 4 years . In addition, he was awarded AP Scholarrecognition in 2023 . `
At Upper Arlington High School ,Charlie has participated in a number of clubs and activities . This academic year he was selected to be a leader in The Bear Denpromoting school spirit within the school sports environment . He was co-president of the Letters for Roseclub . In addition he was a member of the UA mental health club and the business club .
In the community Charlie has been active in a number of service works . He has been part of Leadership UAworking towards a more inclusive community . He has earned the Service Hours and President Volunteer Award for completing 100 hours of volunteering during this past year .Additional volunteering has involved assisting grade school students with skating skills. working at food pantries with his water polo teammates and raising funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society .On the ice Charlie has been involved with coachingFuture Ice Bears . In addition, he has assisted Special Needs hockey fostering fun and a love of the game.
In his senior year Charlie was voted by his teammates to be one of our team captains . This choice was wholeheartedly endorsed by the coaching staff . This selection indicates the respect and trust he has earned among our players . Charlie tends to be a quiet leader , one that leads by example . On a daily basis he comes to the rink to work hard to improve his game and his teammates recognize and credit him for that effort .
The coaching staff has watched Charlie take major steps in his improved play since his sophomore year . This has allowed him to establish a more productive team role each year culminating in a leadership role as a senior . As the season winds to an end ,Charlie can assure himself that he has contributed to the legacy of an outstanding hockey program . Charlie’s presence in the locker room and on the ice will be missed by his coaches and teammates .
The coaching staff believes that Charlie Thackeray meets and exceeds the criteria of Character , Sportsmanship , Citizenship . Teamwork and Academics and is most deserving of the 2024 Upper Arlington Hobey Baker High School Character Award .
