Countdown to Hobey:

George Herlihy

2021 | Massachusetts | BOYS

DS – Weston | Raiders | BOYS

George is a silent leader, he will speak up as needed, but the way he leads is on the ice and with his play; do as I do. I have had George as a Varsity player for 4 seasons, the only program in the player that I have had for 4 seasons.

We merged two schools after his Freshman year as both programs had very small numbers and would probably have to fold. George had the talent to leave and go play at a Prep School easily, but he decided to stick it out and play for his town with his classmates. It is hard to join to High School programs, not know how it will work or if he will have playing time, to his credit he always showed up and always worked hard. By the end of his career he was the only Senior left from Weston and that didn’t stop him from leading and working hard every day for this program.

He can truly say, he left as a player and this program for the better when his career came to an end. Weston had not had a winning season since 2014-15, so he had never experienced winning; he leaves knowing he brought back a winning culture and record along with his fellow DS Seniors. As a player, he was a gritty hard-nosed player from the beginning, being asked to play defense as a Freshman. He had never played Defense before, but never said a word or complaint during that time. He was moved up to offense halfway through the season as the team needed help and he has supplied that ever since. Penalties were always something that came with the fearless way Geroge played the game, but in his Senior year he made a point to get that number down and that he did.

Character. Excellence. A love for the game. Sportsmanship. — these are the words used to personify what the Hobey Baker award and these are the words my coaching staff and I would use to describe Geroge Herlihy. Our leader on and off the ice, who we can count on to teach the players below him, to carry out the gameplan and tweaks on the fly and who as a human being on and off the ice has proven to show excellence. His love for the game kept him coming back every year despite being the only one from his graduating class and a co-op program of uncertainty. Most importantly is his character and the kid that he is, one that many coaches would be thankful to have and luckily we were.
