Hobey Baker High School Character Award program
2021 – 2022 Northwest Ice Hockey
Jackson Cruce
Each year, we hear from coaches, players, and parents about the satisfaction of being recognized for embracing the values the game of hockey teaches – coachability, strength of character, integrity, commitment, teamwork, community building and outstanding sportsmanship. A love for the game.
Northwest Ice Hockey is proud to select Jackson Cruce as its 2021 – 2022 Hobey Baker High School Character Award winner. Jackson consistently demonstrated and embraced those values and characteristics this award recognizes – Character, Excellence, Love of Hockey and Sportsmanship.
Jackson was constantly learning from his coaches, teammates, and watching the Washington Capitals throughout his four years on the Northwest High School ice hockey team. He never hesitated to perform whatever role he was asked to complete on the ice (defense, penalty killing, power play, etc.), was the ultimate team player, and continually demonstrated to his teammates a “Team Firstâ€_x009d_ attitude. Most noteworthy was Jackson’s willingness to move from offensive to defense during his Junior season and throughout his 2021-22 Senior season where through hard work he developed into a solid defender who contributed the team’s success – even scoring twice in the 2021 Montgomery HS Spring League Championship game. He routinely demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship both on and off the ice towards players, coaches and officials.
While his on-ice values and character were noteworthy, Jackson’s strength of character, integrity, commitment, scholarship and community service were best demonstrated in his off-ice activities. Jackson is a truly a scholar athlete as he is not only an AP Scholar with Distinction at Northwest High School but he is also a Montgomery College student taking college-level Chemistry, Engineering Design, and Critical Writing courses — making the Montgomery College Dean’s List! This hard work and scholarship will take Jackson to the University of Pittsburgh in the Fall of 2022 where he will study Chemical Engineering. Jackson even found time to serve as a Summer Camp counselor for three summers.
Most importantly, Jackson is a young scholar athlete of high moral character who lifted the play of his teammates with an always positive attitude, and whose on-ice performance and sportsmanship was routinely noted by coaches and opponents alike. Whether on or off the ice, Jackson demonstrated the values and character Hobey Baker demonstrated in academics, in athletics and as a squadron leader in WWI.
