Over the past four years, the transformation Blake has made mentally, athletically and competitively is a clear guide for what we want our young players to follow. His commitment to the team and our success started day one of his freshman year. Blake is a natural born leader often leading by example through his actions both on and off the ice but is also continuously stepping up to support his community and what he considers to be his brotherhood of teammates. He is a young man that defines integrity, as he often is constantly doing the right thing when no one asks and even when no one is looking. To list out all of the times Blake impressed me by demonstrating his leadership qualities would truly end in a short novel. To name a few that really stand out, he regularly volunteered to motivate and guide his teammates through extra workouts when coaches weren’t around, he passionately runs Lake Central’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes meetings and is always the first to step up as a supportive captain to a teammate in need both at school and the rink. When we find ourselves in a tough spot on the ice, I know I can count on Blake to keep his head and keep his teammates motivated. As a club we run numerous non-mandatory community service events that Blake has had perfect attendance at and can often be seen encouraging his teammates to attend as well. I can honestly say that the impact he has had on this club is unmatched in my years as a coach. Although he was unanimously voted captain by his peers Blake demonstrates that leadership is not a position or a title, it is an everyday action and example. I could not think of a better young man to carry on Hobey Bakers legacy and love for the game than Blake Maynard.
